What is Refractometry?
Refractometry is defined as determination of refractive index of a substance with a refractometer. Light propagates with differing speed in different media. Refractive index, or index of refraction, of a medium is defined as the ratio of the phase velocity of light in vacuum to the phase velocity in the medium itself. An index of refraction of 2 means that the light travels at half the speed of light in a vacuum.
Refractive index is an important parameter in qualitative analysis (e.g. identification of edible oils) and may be used in quantitative analysis (e.g. determination of concentrations) as well. Furthermore determination of material composition and degree of polymerisation can be performed very cost efficient.

The optical design of these refractometers allows accurate measurement of the refractive index with a very thin layer between the prisms. Abbe refractometers manufactured by A. KRÜSS Optronic possess temperature compensation, the ability to temper the prism and a digital thermometer. Partly with digital display and RS232 interface.
